drivers. As a volunteer driver you would be bringing patients undergoing chemotherapy to the
hospital and back home for their treatment. Gifting your time means that cancer patients will have
comfortable (one on one) transport to attend appointments for their lifesaving treatment. If you
can spare 2 days per month, have a valid driving licence, and a safe, reliable vehicle, you are the
perfect candidate to make a significant difference. The Irish Cancer Society will provide you with

Reflection
Today ’s gospel and first reading are at odds with the commonly held view that we shoul d
mind our own business, and let other people mind theirs; we are only responsibl e for our own
behaviour. It is, of course, true that each of us is responsible for his or her own behaviour.
But the Scripture readings today remind us that we have a responsibility for ot hers, one that
may, at times, include correction.
Often what inhibits us from speaking the truth in love to a brother or sist er is our fear of
rejection and conflict. We don ’t want to take the risk of endangering our relationship with those
we love. But a relationship built on the avoidance of all conflict rather than on truth is on a
very shaky foundation indeed. There is a healthy conflict that leads to growth just as ther e is an unhealthy peace
that is really another word for indifference. So, instead of tolerating all sorts of unchristian and destructive
behaviour, today ’s gospel challenges us to correct one another in love and with respect, so that the ent ire
Christian community, all members of the Church of Christ, may glorify the wonder and t he beauty of God who has
made each one of us in his image and who calls us to live as his children. Michael McCabe SMA

Thoughts on the Readings for the 19th Sunday August 16th 2026
Today in the Gospel, we have a continuation of last week’s story about the fee ding
of thousands of people by Jesus in the desert. Immediately after the event, we are
told that Jesus: …made the disciples get into a boat and go on ahead to the oth er
side, while he dismissed the crowds. Was there reluctance on their part to go? Cer-
tainly there is the implication that the disciples were not too willi ng to leave the scene. They were en-
joying the reflected glory of being part of Jesus’ ‘miracle’ and the enthusiasm of the c rowds for Jesus,
‘their’ Jesus. They were basking in the reputation of being partners with Jes us. Yet, it won’t be very
long before they will be hiding, even denying under oath, ever having had connection with him. Jesus
himself, after having dismissed the crowds: …went up the mountain by himself to pray. In John’s ver-
sion of this story he tells us that the people, after being fed by Jesus, actua lly wanted to make him their
king. They, like the disciples, have totally missed the meaning of what has happened. Here indeed was
a real source of temptation. Jesus could easily have convinced himself that here was a golden opportu-
nity to get control of the crowds and ‘save’ them. They were so ready to follow him— it seemed. The
world was at his feet. There is an echo here of one of the temptations in the desert aft er his baptism: …
the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingd oms of the world and their
glory, and he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fal l down and worship me.”

Sliocht as leabhar Isaia fáidh. 56:1, 6-7.
Seo mar a deir an Tiarna: Coinnigi an ceart,
cleachtaígí an fhíréanacht, óir tá mó shlánú ar tí teacht
agus m'fhíréantacht ar tí a léiriú.
Na stráinséirí a chloígh leis an Tiarna chun freastal dó,
chun grá a thabhairt d'ainm an Tiarna agus chun a
bheith ina seirbhísigh aige, iad sin uilig a choinníonn
an tSabóid agus a chloíonn le mo chonradh, déanfaidh
mé iad a chomóradh go dtí mo shliabh naofa.
Bhéarfaidh mé aoibhneas daofa i mo theach urnaí.
Glacfar ar m'altóir lena dtabhartais agus lena n-íobairtí,
óir bhéarfar ar mo theachsa teach urnaí na gciníocha
go léir.
Briathar an Tiarna. FR. Buíochas do Dhia.
Go mola na ciníocha thú, a Dhia;
go mola na ciníocha go léir thú.
Sliocht as litir Naomh Pól chuig na Rómhánaigh.
11:13-15, 29-32.
A phágánaigh! Lig domh seo a insint daoibh: Sa mhéid
gurb aspal na bpágánach mé, is é mo dhulgas éad a
chur ar mo chine féin agus iad a spreagadh chun
iomaíochta libhse agus ar an dóigh sin cuid acu a
shlánú. Mar, ma tugadh an domhan chun
athmhuintearais le Dia trína gcaitheamh amach, cad a
thiocfaidh dá nglacadh ar ais iad ach mar a bheadh
aiséirí ó mhairbh ann? Ní cúis aithreachas ar bith do
Dhia a choíche a thíolaicí ná an rogha a bhíonn déanta
aige. Ionann is mar bhí sibhse easumhal do Dhia san
am a chuaigh thart agus go ndearnadh trócaire oraibh
siocar easumhlaíochta na nGiúdaich, is mar a gcéanna
acu siúd é; tá siadsan easumhal anois nuair atá
trócaire déanta oraibhse, ach déanfar trócaire orthu
féin ar deireadh thiar thall. Mar chuir Dia an uile
dhuine i ngéibheann san easumhlaíocht d'fhonn
trócaire a dhéanamh orthu uilig.
Briathar an Tiarna. FR. Buíochas do Dhia.
ALLELUIA, alleluia!
Is fírinne do bhriathar, a Thiarna.
Déan sinn a naomhú san fhírinne.
Alleluia!
Sliocht as an Soiscéal naofa de réir Naomh Maitiú.
San am sin chuaigh Íosa go dtí ceantar Tuíre agus
Síodón. Tháinig bean as Canán amach as na críocha
