https://www.parishofaghyaran.com Ardmore Parish Newsletter Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Sunday 2nd August 2026 Thoughts on the Gospel Matthew 14:13 –21 – The Feeding of the Five Thousand The miracle of the loaves and fishes begins with compassion . Before Jesus fed the crowd, He first recognised their suffering and their need. His heart was moved by those who were tired, hungry, and searching for hope. In our own busy lives, God gently calls us to notice those around us who may be lonely, discouraged, forgotten, or struggling. A simple word of encouragement, a listening ear, or a small act of kindness may become someone else's miracle. The disciples looked only at what they didn't have . Faced with thousands of hungry people, they saw only five loaves and two fish. Jesus, however, asked them to offer what they already possessed. God rarely asks us for what we do not have. Instead, He asks us to place before Him our time, our talents, our compassion, and our willingness to serve. However small these gifts may seem, He is able to multiply them beyond anything we could imagine. Before distributing the food, Jesus lifted everything to His Father in prayer. This reminds us that surrender is not a sign of weakness or defeat. Rather, it is an act of trust. We all carry burdens that feel too heavy or situations that seem impossible, y et when we place them into God's hands, what appears insufficient can become more than enough. Finally, the twelve baskets of leftovers remind us of God's overwhelming generosity. His blessings are never intended to stop with us but to flow through us. When we forgive generously, encourage freely, and share what we have with others, God's grace continues to multiply in countless lives. Prayer Lord, fill our hearts with compassion. Use the little we have to accomplish great things for Your Kingdom. Teach us to trust You completely, to surrender our limitations into Your hands, and to share Your blessings generously with all whom we meet. Amen. Readings for Next Sunday Ardmore http://www.ardmoreparish.com Sunday 9th August 2026 First Reading: 1 Kings 19:9a, 11 –13a Psalm: Psalm 85:9 –14 Second Reading: Romans 9:1 –5 Gospel: Matthew 14:22 –33 Saints of the Coming Week Tuesday • St John Vianney, Priest Wednesday • The Dedication of the Basilica of St Mary Major (Rome) Thursday • The Transfiguration of the Lord Friday • St Cajetan, Priest • St Sixtus II, Pope, and Companions, Martyrs Saturday • St Dominic, Priest Pope's Prayer Intention for August For Evangelisation in the City Let us pray that in large cities, often marked by anonymity and loneliness, we may discover new ways of proclaiming the Gospel, finding creative paths to build genuine Christian communities. Prayer for Vocations We pray for men whom God is calling to the priesthood. Like Jesus in today's Gospel, may they never turn away from the poor, the hungry, the vulnerable or those most in need, but always reflect the compassionate love of Christ as they nourish His people through the Word of God and the Eucharist. READINGS FOR 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 1 K. 19:9, 11 -13. In the time of Solo- mon (from 970 BC) and after him Israel had become prosperous but corrupt. The prophet Elijah (active 870 - 850 BC) was threatened by Queen Jezebel and had fled to Mount Horeb where Moses had received the 10 com- mandments. There God revealed himself to him in a 'gentle breeze' (and gives him firm instructions, as he had done for Moses.) Second Reading: Rm 9:1 -5. St Paul is heart -broken that his Jewish brothers and sisters, who from the time of Abraham had been prepared so carefully by God to receive the world’s Redeemer, had rejected Him. They had not known ‘the time of their visitation.’ (Lk 19:44). Gospel: Mt. 14:22 -33. The ‘fourth watch’ was between 3 and 6 am. A scary time in a storm. St Matthew’s mes- sage is that in troubled times, when we find ourselves caught between doubt and belief, we must venture forth in faith, relying confidently upon God’s grace. It is always there for us through Jesus, to make up our short- fall in courage. DIVINE MERCY DEVOTIONS will take place on Fri 14 August at 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Church, Cockhill, followed by Mass at 7pm. Jesus first noticed the crowdʼs pain before providing for their hunger. In our busy lives, God invites us to see those who are lonely, discouraged, or forgotten. Even small acts of kindness can become someoneʼs miracle. The disciples focused on what they lacked, yet Jesus asked them to oer what they did have. God rarely asks for what we do not possess. When we oer our time, talents, and resources — h owever small — H e multiplies them in ways we cannot imagine. Before the food was shared, Jesus surrendered everything to the Father. We too carry burdens that feel heavy, but surrender is not giving up; it is trusting God with our limitations. What seems insuicient to us becomes more than enough in HisndClonleigh (Strabane Pastoral Area) https://clonleighparish.com hands. The abundance le over reminds us that Godʼs blessings are meant to flow through us. When we share generously, encourage others, and forgive freely, His grace continues to multiply. Lord, fill us with compassion, use what little we oer, and multiply it for Your glory. Teach us to trust You and to share Your blessings generously. Amen. Monthly Mass in Honour of St Pio will be celebrated on Wednesday 5th August at 7.00 pm in Immaculate Conception Church, Strabane. We ask Godʼs blessing on all through the intercession of St Pio. Prayer at Time of Exam Results Dear Lord, in this moment of uncertainty, I seek Your peace and guidance. Help me to accept the results of my eorts with grace, whether they meet my hopes or not. Grant me the strength to learn and grow from this experience, trusting in Your plan for my life. May I find comfort in Your love and wisdom. May Your peace fill my heart as I walk forward in faith. Christ the King, Strathroy: Saturday 6.15pm -6.45pm REST A WHILE In our day -to-day life’s journey, oftentimes we are overwhelmed with our daily routines, individual tasks as well as duties and responsibilities. It seems that the 24 hours of the day are not enough because we are too busy with so many things. We do not have time to “stop and smell the roses.” We do not have time to relax and to take time out of our busy schedules to appreciate and enjoy God ’s gift of the beauty of life. We need time to rest, to recognises our human limitations that we need essential respite to prevent us from being exhausted and to avoid the possible danger of breakdown. According to the mechanical engineers, even machines need cooling -off time to prevent overheating. When we approach our “hallowed space ” like spending time praying in front of the Blessed Sacrament or lighting candles inside the church, we are refreshed and strengthened. We will be inspired to go on despite all the burdens, challenges, and obstacles in life. That is why after the tiresome and successful mission of the Apostles the Lord told them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while. ” Following Jesus ’ command, these first followers were spiritually and physically recharged to do the next job. We also badly need to have some “refreshment ” of the Lord and to spend time with Him in silent prayer to find meaning in every life ’s situation. In this way, we are far from being “worn out” and preventing ourselves from “falling apart. ” And so, let us all find time to relax and rest for a while with Him. Fourth Sunday of Advent Sunday 21 December Christmas Message 2025 This week we will celebrate Christmas Day. The birth of Jesus Christ, over two thousand years ago, was a pivotal moment in the lives of many people at that time, and ever since. In a sense, we join the Angels, the Shepherds, and the Wise Men who rejoiced with Mary and Joseph at the birth of the long awaited Saviour of the world. We join the apostles and the disciples - men and women - who knew Jesus personally, who walked with Him and worked with Him in those early days of spreading the Good News of God's love for us in sending His Son among us. We join all those who, down the years and right up to our own time, have lived up to their baptismal promises to be God's people, living and handing on the faith to the generations coming behind them. As we gather with family, friends, neighbours, and fellow parishioners for Christmas Mass and other celebrations, let us pledge ourselves to be a people of Faith, Hope, and Love in a world which needs the presence of Jesus Christ - through our care, our words, and our actions - now more than ever before. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year. Nollaig shona daoibh, agus Athbhliain faoi mhaise. Fr. JESUS IS WITH US IN THE STORMS OF LIFE Every Christian experiences storms. We naturally ask the Lord to remove our difficulties, yet the Gospel reveals that Jesus often offers something even greater: His presence. Rather than simply calming the storm around us, He seeks to deepen our trust in Him within it. The greatest miracle in this Gospel is not that Jesus walked on water, nor even that Peter briefly did the same. The true miracle is that frightened, faltering disciples became worshippers who recognised Jesus as the Son of God. Perhaps our prayer should be less, “Lord, make my life easier, ” and more, “Lord, whatever storm I must face, keep my eyes fixed on You. ” When we do stumble, as Peter did, we can be confident that Christ ’s saving hand is already reaching out to lift us up FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION Saturday is the Feast of the Assumption and is a holy day of obligation. Local Safeguarding Representatives are Mary McGranaghan and Brídín Hannaway A short reflection on today’s Gospel Matthew 1 4:22-33 In today’s Gospel, the disciples find themselves struggling against strong winds while Jesus comes to them, walking on the water. At first, they are filled with fear, but Jesus reassures them with the simple yet powerful words: "Take courage! It is I. Do not be afraid." Like the disciples, we all encounter storms in our lives - times of uncertainty, anxiety, illness, or loss. Peter's experience reminds us that faith is not about never doubting, but about keeping our eyes fixed on Christ. When Peter focuses on Jesus, he walks on the water; when he focuses on the wind and waves, he begins t o sink. Yet even then, Jesus immediately reaches out His hand to save him. This Gospel is a beautiful reminder that the Lord is always present, even when He seems distant. He does not promise a life free from storms, but He does promise that we will never face them alone. As we gather around the Lord's table this Sunday, may we h ear His reassuring voice, trust in His presence, and reach out to Him in faith, knowing that His hand is always extended towards us. Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood : For our seminarians and the men considering priesthood that, in moments of doubt, they'll hear Jesus say what He says to the disciples in today's gospel, "Courage! It is I. Do not be afraid!" On Saturday 15th August, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a Holy Day of Obligation. We gather to give thanks to God for the gift of Our Lady, who was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory, and to renew our hope in the promise of the Resurrection. Mass times are as follows: Friday 14th August – 6.15pm and 7.30pm Saturday 15th August – 7.00am, 9.30am, 11.00am, and 12.30pm . The Exhibition will run until 18th August and everyone is welcome. On 14th August, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St Maximilian Kolbe, a Polish Franciscan priest and martyr of charity . Imprisoned in Auschwitz during the Second World War, he freely offered his life in place of a fellow prisoner who had been selected to die. His extraordinary act of self -sacrificing love reflects Christ's own words: "No one has greater love than this, to lay down one's life for one's friends" (John 15:13). St Maximilian had a deep devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary and dedicated his priesthood to spreading the Gospel through prayer, the media, and missionary work. His courage, faith, and love continue to inspire Christians throughout the world. As we honour St Maximilian Kolbe, may we ask for his intercession, that we too may grow in faith, charity, and the courage to bear witness to Christ in our daily lives.
