What areweto have then?” Jesus said tohim,“I tell you solemnly, Everyone who has left father, mother, brother, sister for the sake of my name will receive a hundred times over and also inherit eternal life.” “Many who are first will be last, and the last, first.” Christ goes on then to tell the parable of the Landowner, the workers and the vineyard. This great parable tells usina dramatic way about the generosity of God. Peter and his companions took a very courageous step in life; they left the familiar life of boats, fishing, companions and many familiar places to searc hforanew life with the C hrist, the Messiah. The new life brought happiness, fulfilment and many challenges. However from time to time there were niggling doubts and questions hence the question, “what about us, we have left everything.” The first lesson from the word of God today is that it is important to put words on our questions. Raising questions provides opportunities forusto learn and in today’s gospel Peters’ question provides the context for the great teaching on the generosity of God. The culture and society of the 21st century continually reinforces the correctness of asking the question “what about us, we have left everything “. The culture oftheday goes even further and ask “ What about me, what is my reward going to be “ The world of achievement and success finds it di fficult to accommodate the generosity of God. Help us to realise that Idonot have to earn or deserve the generosity of God’s love in my life, th ankfully it is freely available to me twenty fours even. We have seen many of you, wonderful readers readfor various occasions but very few commit to reading at weekend Masses. It would help you become a more confidant public speaker and also good for your CV’sin later years. There is a rota system so it would not be every Sunday. Also for students in transition or above ifyouarea regular Mass goer, you might consider becomi ng a Minister of the E ucharist. Training will be provided for both. Ministers of the Word and Eucharistic Ministers are needed in both churches. Envelope Collection For funds which support seminarians and deacons The annual collection for the Priesthood Education Fund will take place across the Diocese this weekend 19th/20th S ep tember. This fund plays a vital role in supporting the formation and ongoing education of those serving in priestly and diaconal ministry. In addition the fund also supports the ongoing training and education of priests in the Diocese. We are deeply aware of the financial challenges many individuals and families faceat this time. Nevertheless, we kindly askyouto support this important collection as generously as possible. Your continued support in promoting vocations is sincerely appreciated. Reflection for Parents How many times adaydoour children point out that someone got more than they did? E nough, I'm sure, forusto know that today's Gospel illustrates a human re- sponse! But our human ways are not God's ways. God' s generosity is sometimes beyond our understanding. But imagine what a world it would beifwe rejoiced in gen- erosity and good fortune of others. C antairí Mhúscraí is a mixed voice choir based here in Ballincollig and have a wide repertoire of music in cluding church, classical, popular and showtunes. Apart from other performances we sing in St. Mary’s & St. J ohn’s Church at the 6.00p m Mass on the 3rd Saturday of every month. We welcome new members to all lines, without formal audition. Ability to read music is not essential, we just need singers who can hold a tune and blend into the overall sound. We rehearse every Wednesday night from 7.20 to 9.20pm at Ballincollig C ommunity S choo l. Joining at this time of year is ideal as we begin to learn new music. See you there! As a volunteer driver you would be bringing patients undergoing chemotherapy to the hospital and back home for their treatment. Gifting your time means that cancer patients will have comfortable (oneonone) transport to aƩend appointments for their lifesaving treatment. Gospel: MaƩhew 20:1-16. The vineyard owner hired five groups of labourers. E ach subsequent group began work later intheday. When the owner hired the first group, they agreed on a fair wage. Attheendoftheday, he called in the workers and began paying them , the last ones first. Of course, the early morning crew saw the later ones geƫng a full day's wage and excitedly anticipated a bonus for themselves. When they were paid, they received only the negotiated amount. The main message of the Gospel for the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time i s that GodÕs grace and mercy are unconditional gifts, not wages to be earned. 1. God operates on love, not transactional logic: Human systems are built on merit, where your reward matches your hours logged. God, however, does n ot use a spirtual timecard. The landowner pays the workers who arrived at the final ho ur the exact same daily wage (a denarius) as those who slaved all day in the heat. This shows that salvation and divine love are granted out of pure generosity, not bas ed on our personal achievements or how long we have been ÒpiousÓ. 2. Radical equality in the eyes of God: The parable directly challenges our human instincts about fairness. The early workers grumble, expecting more because they did more. By treating everyone equally, Jesus flips human hierarchy u pside down, concluding with the definitive phrase: The last will be first, and the fir st will be last. In GodÕs Kingdom, those who enter the faith late in life are just as valued as those who have served God since childhood. 3. A cure for spiritual envy: When the landowner asks the resentful workers, ÒAre you envious because I am generous?Ó, Jesus exposes a deep flaw in hum an nature. The Gospel warns us against comparing our spiritual journey to othe rs or resenting someone elseÕs blessings. Instead, it invites us to rejoice in GodÕs mercy whenever and to whomever it is given. The talks will be given by Fr. Kevin O'Gorman SMA. Fr. Kevin was a professor of moral theology in Maynooth University. He is now based in the SMA Wilton. He studied in Maynooth and Rome and Lectured in South Africa, Miltown and Maynooth on philosophy and theology. He is the author of several books including Divine Diamond, on facets of the fourth gospel and Divine Gallery on the gospel of St Luke. Venue: The four talks will be held in the parish meeting room. When : Thursday evening starting on the 8th of October, 15th, 22nd, and 29th October. Time: 7.30 to 9.00pm. There will, as always be the opportunity for a cup of tea and discussion. Choir: Our church choir has returned and we welcome them back. As always, new members are very welcome. Practice is on Tuesday nights from 7:30 – 9:00pm. No auditions! On Tuesday next, September 22nd 2026, The Lough Flower and Garden Club will host Sue O'Neill and Helen Mullaney will demonstrate ‘Floral Delights ’. The vineyard owner is God. The labourers areallthe people whogetan oppor- tunity to hear the word of God and live byit. The agreed daily wage is God’s agreement with anyofhis believers that once they listen to the word of God and put it into action in their daily life then they will get their reward which is life in the Kingdom of Heaven. The work day in this parable represents a person’s life on earth. Jesus used this parable to explain that whether you hear the word of God and put it action as a young child or whether you only hear about the word of God and put it into action later in life the reward is exactly the same, eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Cork & Ross Lourdes Pilgrimage The Cork and Ross diocese is in Lourdes at present. Altogether there are over 430 people on the pilgrimage including a group of about 30 people who are travelling as pilgrims, helpers and assisted pilgrims with Glounthaune parish. They are taking part in the various ceremonies that are part of this and every pilgrimage to Lourdes. The highpoint of all pilgrimages to Lourdes is the celebration of Mass at the Grotto which for the Cork and Ross pilgrimage will be on Tuesday of this week at 7.30am (Irish time). The Grotto Mass and the other ceremoniese. g. Blessed Sacrament Procession, Torchlight Procession can be viewed on the Lourdes TV website and updates will also be posted on the diocesan website. Please keep in your prayers all those who are travelling on the pilgrimage, especially the sick and assisted pilgrims, as we will pray and light candles for those who have asked us to remember them during our time in Lourdes. Priesthood Education Fund This annual collection takes place in parishes across the diocese this weekend. This fund plays a vital role in supporting the formation and ongoing education of those serving in priestly and diaconal ministry. We are deeply aware of the financial challenges that many individuals and families face at this time. Nevertheless, we kindly ask you to support this collection with your usual generosity. Priesthood in Cork and Ross If you are between the ages of 18 and 40 and feel there is a possibility that God may be calling you to be a diocesan priest, then our monthly discernment group meetings may be a good way to help you discern this call. It is a gentle first step in the process which takes the form of a monthly meeting. These monthly meetings offer an opportunity for prayer, conversation, fellowship and accompaniment. The Priest must live only to become a saint A book titled: ‘The Priests we need to save the Church’ is a crie-de-cour by the author for real priests, holy men, to lead once again the Church of God - and to offer solace and sure support to the flock of Christ that is lost and bleeding. The writer, Kevin Wells, demands much from the priest who will ministe r today. He says “for far too long too many wayward churchmen have profaned, insulted, and trampled upon a sacred heritage that generations of hardworking, sincere Catholics priests built their lives around. “We need faithful priests - not the lazy, repressed, social justice types with inauthentic vocations who have packed the seminaries, dominated the headlines, and sullied the reputation of the holy priesthood over the past several decades. Until the parish priest lives only to become a saint, there will be no healing in the Church. Until the parish priest embraces poverty and pours himself out without counting the cost, the Church's sickness will worsen. Until the parish priest decides to die for his flock, the Church will remain on life support. “We need real men today; bold proclaimers of God's Word who are unafraid to preach the Catholic faith as the blazing furnace of Truth that it is. We need priests who are willing to preach tough homilies, hear daily confessions, commit to daily Holy Hours, and remain magnanimous of heart through long, sometimes thankless 16-hour days. We need priests to offer up their lives now so that the laity will gain a restored sense of fatherhood. Such priests will become the story of our time. The proceeds of the collection go to the Diocesan Education Fund which meets the cost of seminarians’ fees at St. Patrick’s College, Maynooth, and also contributes to post-graduate studies of priests of the diocese. Family of Parishes Our Lady Crowned Church St Joseph’s Church & Holy Family Church Gospel Reflection: Be persistent… and patient… Our Gospel today is about persistence… just as the widow in the story pesters the judge until he delivers a just decision we too are called to be persistent. Persistence in prayer demonstrates that we are not afraid to show our dependence on God even though all around us society says we need be self-sufficient, to look after ourselves. To keep praying is equally looking after ourselves but also the needs of those around us and the needs of our world. The widow in the story is concerned about the delay in getting a response, however we must not only must persevere in prayer we must be patient, awaiting God’s time for an answer and accepting the answer even though it may not be one we wanted! God will always give the right answer to our prayers, even if in the immediate moment it may not seem that way. Take time to reflect on what have been the fruits of your own persistent prayer? Cork Cathedral Fa mily of Pari shes La unches Cli mate Justice Education Project The Cork Cathedral Family of Parishes was delighted to officially launch its Climate Justice Education Project, bringing together members of our parishes, community organisations and invited guests for a morning of reflection, discussion and shared commitment to caring for our common home. Introducing Lay Funeral Ministers We still value having our funerals over several days, we appreciate the effort our neighbours make to come to the funeral home to sympathise, we look for a funeral Mass which acknowledges the personality of the deceased person an d their relationships, not just a generic church service to pray for them. To assist parishioners keep our funerals as we like to have them, our north-side parishes will introduce lay ministers as part of a funeral team with the clergy. Initially these lay funeral ministers will lead the bereaved in prayer the ni ght before the funeral Mass, usually in the funeral home, as priests used to do before Covid. Many of us have missed that moment of prayer with the priest and so we will re-introduce it with the lay ministers. In time, the lay funeral ministers will be available to families to begin prep aring the funeral Mass with the diocesan booklet of readings, prayers and hymns. Later, they may be present at the funeral Mass and be of help there. We're not sure when priests will begin to be unavailable for all the burial services i n the cemeteries, but it is worth preparing for that eventuality sooner rather than later. A number of parishioners have already been approached to consider taking on this rewarding ministry. They will be trained over several weeks by the diocese and then begin working alongside the clergy of our parishes. We are all aware o f the lay funeral ministers already operating in Farranree, around The Lough and

We know you will appreciate the ministry of lay funeral ministers alongside the ministry of the priests and deacons, representing the parish by leading mourn ers and their neighbours, family and friends, in prayer the night before the funeral Mass. While we are beginning with the three northside parishes which have approximately 166 funerals of parishioners each year - the cathedral, Blackpoo l with the Glen and Ballyvolane, Sunday's Well - in time, we will extend this valuable ministry to the other parishes in our family of parishes. Please k eep your fellow parishioners in prayer as they prepare to serve in our pari shes. The initial meeting for those already approached to consider this ministry will be on Wednesday 30th September at 7pm in the Cathedral Visitor Centre. Historic Moment in our Parish Looking back over the last 12 months the shock of needing a new boiler for the church stands out. We were 7 weeks withou t heat in the coldest part of the year. The challenge of finan cingnd

the installation of a boiler was immense, the cost being €30,000. Within three months this amount was raised, mostly by large anonymous donations. At this stage these generous contributions, together with several more modest sums, deserve the most sincere and warm appreciation. Have you ever felt that they were receiving better treatment than you, even though youputin more effort, more time, ordida better job than they did?Ifyouare like me and answer honestly – I am sure wecanall, say YESto these questions; and so, this parable is for each ofus!Our Gospel today offers a radical way of looking at life and work. Today Jesus upsets the expectations and the commonly held views of the status seeking and result-driven society. He makes it clear that the economy of the Kingdom of Godisnot based on individual merit, competition, success and achievement; rather it is predicated on the common good, justice, inclusion and equity for all people. That iswhyhe tells this parable where the vineyard owner gives as much to the last hired worker that dayashe does to those hired first. It was hard to accept for the workers that day, just asitis hard forusto accept sometimes when we feel we are treated unfairly in comparison to others. Today offers us an invitation to reflect and to come to accept that the common good of all people iswayofthe Gospel. Our Annual Remembrance Mass will take place this year on the weekend of the 7th and 8th of November. All those who have died since November 2025 will be remembered in a special way on that weekend in our three churches in our Family of Parishes. All families will be contacted prior to that weekend. Sacraments of First Holy Communion & Confirmation 2027 Dates will be available in October. A meeting will be held for all families involved in both sacraments in October and families will be contacted through the schools. The Enrolment Ceremony for both Sacraments will take place on the First Sunday of Advent. We look forward to meeting all families at our Sunday Masses as we prepare together for your child’s special day.
