RECONCILIATION be available
in the Cathedral starting from
Saturday, 10 October.

This arrangement will be
reviewed after one month to
assess its continuation and
any necessary adjustments.
We encourage parishioners to

Education Project
The Cork Cathedral Family of Parishes was delighted to officially launch its
Climate Justice Education Project, bringing together members of our
parishes, community organisations and invited guests for a morning of
reflection, discussion and shared commitment to caring for our common
home.
Introducing Lay Funeral Ministers
We still value having our funerals over several days, we appreciate the effort our
neighbours make to come to the funeral home to sympathise, we look for a
funeral Mass which acknowledges the personality of the deceased person an d
their relationships, not just a generic church service to pray for them.
To assist parishioners keep our funerals as we like to have them, our north-side
parishes will introduce lay ministers as part of a funeral team with the clergy.
Initially these lay funeral ministers will lead the bereaved in prayer the ni ght
before the funeral Mass, usually in the funeral home, as priests used t o do
before Covid. Many of us have missed that moment of prayer with the priest and
so we will re-introduce it with the lay ministers.
In time, the lay funeral ministers will be available to families to begin prep aring
the funeral Mass with the diocesan booklet of readings, prayers and hymns.
Later, they may be present at the funeral Mass and be of help there. We're not
sure when priests will begin to be unavailable for all the burial services i n the
cemeteries, but it is worth preparing for that eventuality sooner rather than
later.
A number of parishioners have already been approached to consider taking on
this rewarding ministry. They will be trained over several weeks by the diocese
and then begin working alongside the clergy of our parishes. We are all aware o f
the lay funeral ministers already operating in Farranree, around The Lough and
Togher.
We know you will appreciate the ministry of lay funeral ministers alongside the
ministry of the priests and deacons, representing the parish by leading mourn ers
and their neighbours, family and friends, in prayer the night before the funeral
Mass.
While we are beginning with the three northside parishes which have
approximately 166 funerals of parishioners each year - the cathedral, Blackpoo l
with the Glen and Ballyvolane, Sunday's Well - in time, we will extend this
valuable ministry to the other parishes in our family of parishes. Please k eep
your fellow parishioners in prayer as they prepare to serve in our pari shes.
The initial meeting for those already approached to consider this ministry will be
on Wednesday 30th September at 7pm in the Cathedral Visitor Centre. The
diocesan training will be on three consecutive Wednesdays nights: 14th, 21st,
and 28th October. Venue to be decided.

MALABAR CATHOLIC COMMUNITY
ST. BRENDAN’S CHURCH
Our Syro-Malabar Catholic Church Community in
Cork has been celebrating Holy Qurbana and
conducting Catechism classes at SMA Wilton
Church for many years.
We are pleased to announce that, through the
kind consideration, vision and guidance of Bishop
Fintan Gavin, we have now been granted
permission to celebrate our Holy Qurbana at St.
Brendan’s Roman Catholic Church, The Glen, and
to conduct our Catechism classes at the school
located adjacent to the church.
Going forward, our regular Sunday schedule will
be:
- 3:30 PM – Catechism Classes
- 5:00 PM – Holy Qurbana
We would like to express our sincere and
heartfelt gratitude to Bishop Fintan Gavin for
inviting and welcoming our community to St.
Brendan’s and for making this new arrangement
possible.
We are also deeply grateful to Fr. John, who has
provided us with valuable assistance and support
throughout this process.
Our heartfelt thanks also go to all the
parishioners of St. Brendan’s Church of
Blackpool, Glen, Ballyvolane Parish for their
warm and gracious welcome to our community.
We truly appreciate their kindness, generosity
and support as we begin this new chapter
together.
