Reflections
I JUST DON'T
LIKE THIS
STORY.The forty-two parables in the Gospels are designed to take us
up short and make us think again. Today’s parable is a good
example. The actions of the employer and the treatment of the
workers simply would not work today as a labour relations strategy
and would also not have worked in the time of Jesus. And what
is the point? Really that it doesn’t matter when we come to the
Gospel, early, middle or late, by routes direct or circuitous, in full
stride or falteringly: all that matters is that we come to the Gospel.
Achievement counts for nothing; grace is everything, thanks be to
God!
Prayer
The door of faith is always open and you welcome us, O God,
whenever our hearts are open. We are grateful for your loving
patience and generosity.
Christian Meditation Group – A group of people from our Family
of Parishes continue to meet on each Friday morning at 10.15am
in the Parish Centre. After a short introduction there is 20 minutes
of silent prayer/meditation concluding with the Our Father. We
welcome you to join us. Contact 087 6477841 for details.1. “I was there /f_irst” . Envy easily comes to the surface when faced
with the good fortune of others, especially when compared to
what seems less favourable treatment of ourselves. Can you recall
that feeling in yourself and what it did to you? Can you also recall
times when you were content with your lot, even though it seemed
others had greater gifts, better opportunities, etc.
2. A parent or teacher who gives a lot of time to a difficult child does
not love the others less, but if we are one of those other children we
may not see that. Recall a “Jesus person’ in your life who helped you
to overcome feelings of envy and helped you appreciate that the
apparently more favourable treatment of another did not mean a
lessening of love for you.
3. Generosity can make us uncomfortable. We feel more
comfortable when we see ourselves as having done something
to deserve the generosity. But perhaps you can recall a moment
of great need, when you were at the receiving end of someone’s
generosity, a time when you recognised you had done nothing to
‘deserve’ that response, a time when all you could do was to say
“thanks”?
4. This leads us to the core message of this parable, namely, that
God’s love is a free gift and not earned. Recall moments when you
were particularly conscious of the gift that God’s love is to you.
5. “It is too late now” are words some- times uttered to justify
doing nothing about a situation. This parable tells us that where
love is involved, it is never too late. Can you recall times when you
got a positive response after taking action when you thought it was
“too late”?
PRAYER
God most high, your ways are not our ways, for your kindness is
lavished equally upon all. Teach us to welcome your mercy towards
others, even as we hope to receive mercy ourselves.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives
and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God for ever
and ever. Amen.First Reading (Isaiah 55:6–9)
The prophet urges people to seek the Lord, reminding us that God's
thoughts and ways are in/f_initely higher and more merciful than our
human standards.
Second Reading (Philippians 1:20c–24, 27a)
St. Paul expresses from prison that Christ is his entire life,
encouraging the community to live in a manner worthy of the
Gospel.
Gospel (Matthew 20:1–16a)
Jesus tells the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard, where laborers
hired at the very end of the day receive the exact same daily wage
as those who toiled from dawn, illustrating that God's grace is a gift,
not a wage earned.

SMA NATIONAL NOVENA TO ST. THÉRÉSE
Due to the ongoing repair to our Church roof on the Blackrock
Road, we will be celebrating St. Thérése’s Novena in our
SMA CHURCH IN WILTON, CORK CITY T12 KR23
The Novena will begin on Wednesday 23rd. September and
will close on Thursday lst. October. 2026. The Novena Mass will
be celebrated at 7.30pm. each evening, (except Saturday 26th.
September @ 6pm. Mass). Each evening we will have a different SMA
priest leading the Mass and he will be joined by a guest choir/singer.
BALLINLOUGH MEN’S RETIREMENT CLUB meets every
Wednesday afternoon from 2.00pm to 4.00pm.(resuming on 2nd.
Sept after summer break) in Ballinlough Community Centre. The
members enjoy an afternoon of Short Mat Bowls (Bowls supplied by
the club) in an atmosphere of fun and camaraderie.
New members are welcome: our Membership comes from the

SECOND COLLECTION ON WEEK ENDING 19/20 SEPTEMBER
is for PRIESTHOOD EDUCATION. COMBONI MISSIONARIES OF THE HEART OF JESUS
MISSION APPEAL.
The Society were most appreciative for the sum raised on 15/16
August in our Church which amounted to €2,095.00Holy Cross Church – on this Sunday, the 12.15pm Mass in Holy
Cross will be a celebration of the fortieth anniversary of the church.
A Redemptorist led Triduum of Prayer will take place from Monday
– Wednesday of this week with 9.30am Mass each morning in
Holy Cross Church and a celebration each evening at 7.30pm
prepared with different groups in Mahon Parish. These events
are a celebration of the people of the parish and our community.
In celebrating this milestone for Holy Cross, we remember all
those who worked so hard to support the building of the church
especially those now gone to their eternal reward. While we
celebrate the past, we look to the future with trust and hope.
May the eternal light of Heaven shine on those who gave so
much. May God bless us all as we celebrate together and may the
strength and resilience of the Holy Cross of Jesus continue to be a
blessing in our lives and our parish community.

Holy Cross Church – Fortieth Anniversary – preparations continue
in Mahon Parish to celebrate this landmark very soon. The
Redemptorist Fathers will lead a Triduum of Prayer from Monday
21st – Wednesday 23rd September. The themes will be Hope,
Healing & Community. Remembrance of those who have been
involved and supported the construction and develop ment of
the church will also be honoured. There will be a special Mass on
Sunday 20th September @ 12.15pm and all are welcome. –
