It’s said the Eskimos have over 100 words for snow.
We Irish have as many terms for rain. Six months of precipitation
from January to June 2026 turned into a glorious summer, leading to a
hosepipe ban, and drought, and then, inevitably, more rain. We get
weary of rain, and yet, without it, we die, and so do our plants and
shrubs and animals. Water means life, which is why we use it to
baptise and to bless.
‘Living Water’ is the theme for Creationtide this year, which runs
from September 1st to October 4th. Its themes include water
conservation, ecosystem renewal and community action. You can
mark Creationtide practically:
• Switch to green energy; reduce your environmental impact.
• Conduct a water audit, sort out leaks and reduce waste.
• Keep our rivers clean and free from rubbish and farm pollution.
• Thank God for water: without it we wouldn’t exist.
• PRAY LIKE THIS: “Lord, help us remember how essential water
is for all life, for creatures, for the earth, for balance in creation.
Inspire us to play our part, to build a new and better world where
God’ s creation is valued and our common home preserved for future
generations.”
