Sundays are an essential part of worship. We go to God together. The Sunday Mass where the Church is most visibly alive, and where every member of the community plays an essential role, is clear - this participation is needed for the Church to truly live. We are deeply thankful to priests, ministers and all those who celebrate Mass. Special gratitude goes to those involved in liturgical ministries, such as Altar Servers, Ministers of the Word, Sacristans, and/or Readers. Encouraging the number of young people as Altar Servers is especially important and should be actively supported by their families and parishes. Day for Life Today, Sunday 21st June the Church across Ireland celebrates Day for Life in the theme of The Humanity of the Unborn Child which invites us to reflect on the wonder of how life from the moment of conception. We remember how the Lord Jesus Christ Himself sanctified and experienced the beginning of life in the womb of Mary, Mary knew that she was carrying the Son of God - God and man - as soon as He was conceived. John the Baptist leapt in his mother Elizabeth’s womb when Mary greeted her. Our Lady treasured Our Lord in her heart and womb until His birth. St. Mary of the Visitation Parish, Killybegs Parish Office, Killybegs, Co. Donegal, F94 CY56 Tel: +353 (0)74 9731013 Parish Secretary: Ann O'Donnell (Office Open: Mon to Fri 9.45am to 2.45pm) Email: info@killybegsparish.com Website: killybegsparish.com Parish Priest: Fr. Colm O'Gallchoir Tel: 074 9731013 Masses and Services: Live streaming www.mcn.live (link on website) A Word of Gratitude from Fr Colm I had a memorable weekend celebrating the Golden Jubilee of my Ordination. With the Church of my Ordination, Teach Pobail Mhuire, Derrybeg, being destroyed by fire a year last Saturday, I celebrated Mass at home with family and neighbours last Saturday, followed by a delightful meal. On Sunday I celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving at St. Mary of the Visitation Church here in Killybegs at 1pm, followed by refreshments in Foresters Hall. Both celebrations touched me deeply as did the presence of so many. My sincere gratitude to everyone concerned. There was a great atmosphere in the Chapel on Sunday and indeed I found it very emotional. Some family members were present, with my brother Fr. Séán concelebrating, along with Fr. Charlie, Fr. Brian, Ministers of the Word and Eucharist, Gift Bearers, Collectors and Altar Servers played their part, along with our exceptional Parish Choir, who presented me with a lovely gift, accompanied by song. Plunkett Smith was there to keep a visual record, along with Thomas Gallagher of the Donegal Democrat. Our beautiful Church is so conducive to liturgical celebrations and the presence of a vibrant and appreciative faith-community made it such a memorable celebration for me, receiving such warm and heartfelt congratulations and good wishes, along with a multitude of cards and gifts for which I am deeply grateful. Thank you sincerely for your kindness, thoughtfulness and generosity. I did not expect Foresters Hall to be full to capacity and the refreshments served by Stephanie Hegarty and her family was a wonderful surprise to me. Fr. Eamonn Kelly and his team from Rosebeg, for spearheading the operation with such dedication and thoroughness and those who helped, giving so generously of their time and energy. Thanks also to the Foresters Hall Committee. Celebrating with my own family on Saturday and celebrating with the parish community and friends here in Killybegs on Sunday meant so much to me and marked the Golden Jubilee of my Ordination in the most memorable way possible. These prayers are not inconsequential pious throw-aways – they are an expression of our union with Christ, praying as the Body of Christ in response to the Word of God – praying through him, with him and in him – which is why the prayers are ordinarily made (though not bindingly prescribed) as an addressed to God the Father. The Church asks that this prayer be relatively short, as opposed to long winded paragraphs, and that they should ordinarily be prayers that gather the whole Church and World into the intentions of this congregation gathered for this Mass on this Sunday. These prayers, therefore, are not ordinarily a moment to be specific about a given private or very local issue. For example, while we might pray for good weather for the farming community to do its important business, we wouldn't be so specific as to pray that Farmer John gets his farming work done. Of course, anyone who knows our local Farmer John can include him in their participation in the prayer – the prayer spoken from the Ambo is usually more wide ranging rather than specific. Exceptions are permitted by the Church when the congregation is gathered for a specific ceremony or celebration: Funerals, Confirmations, Weddings etc. For the Prayers of the Faithful the Church has guidelines to follow. The order of the prayers is usually: for the needs of the Church, for public authorities and the Salvation of the whole world; for grave difficulties that afflict people and even nations; then finally for the local community. At the end of each prayer the acclamation is spoken: “Lord hear us!” The congregation replies: “Lord, graciously hear us!” We call out to God, confident that he will hear us. We are encouraged by the Word of God which we have recounted to us something of God’s past interventions with the human race; especially in sending His Only Begotten Son, Jesus. In effect, in faith we are presenting him the difficulties that afflict our present world asking him to intervene with his grace, power, mercy and love we know he has done in the past, especially as we have heard from the Sacred Scriptures. So, the Bidding Prayers are no mere formality. They are meant to be heartfelt pleas to God the Father, made IN the Holy Spirit, BY us, THROUGH Christ Jesus. In faith we call out: “Lord graciously hear us!” Parish of Newtowncunningham & Killea Email: office@newtownkilleaparish.ie Website: www.newtownkilleaparish.ie Sunday Collections: Amount €1485 Retired Clergy €390 Thank you for your continued generosity to your Parish. However, over the years, times and days have been changed to accommodate people and situations. We are presently undertaking a review of the Adoration times and days in all three parish churches. You might let Fr Kelly or any members of the Parish of Raphoe Committee know your ideas. When we have listened to your ideas we will be in a much better position to make the right decisions regarding Adoration in the parish of Raphoe. Every hour in itself is a commitment and so all the adorers have to make good commitment. It seems nowadays people do not like making such commitments. So please pray about this and let Fr Kelly or anyone on the Parish of Raphoe Committee know your thoughts on Adoration in our parish.
