Parables speak to the heart and command an alertness to all that is said and all that is unsaid. We need to pay attention to detail, but must also be careful not to miss the hidden meaning in the parable experience. The parable does not end once we are finished hearing or reading it. It stays with us; disturbs us; forces us to ponder. Parables should awaken our senses. Today’s parable highlights the various ways that we do not allow God’s word to penetrate deep into our hearts and minds. Jesus tells the disciples; ‘The reason I speak to them in parable is that ‘seeing they do not perceive, and hearing they do not listen’. Jesus emphasises the enormous harvest that is waiting for those who really ‘open their hearts’. If we are open to the parable experience, if the soil is truly receptive, perhaps the Word can affect us in the same way. In the coming Sundays we will hear more parables. The difference lies not in the quality of the seed, but in the condition of the soil that receives it. Jesus invites us to reflect honestly on our own hearts. At different times we may recognise ourselves in each type of soil. We can become hardened by disappointment, shallow in our commitment, or distracted by the pressures and attractions of daily life. Yet the Lord never stops sowing. He continues to speak to us through the Scriptures, the Sacraments, the Church, and the quiet moments of prayer. The good soil is the heart that remains open, patient, and willing to be transformed by God’s grace. Such a heart does not simply hear the word but lives it. The fruit it bears is seen in acts of kindness, forgiveness, generosity, and faithful discipleship. As we listen to God's word this week, may we ask the Holy Spirit to break up whatever has become hard within us, remove the thorns that hinder our growth, and deepen our roots in Christ. Then the seed of the Gospel will flourish, bearing an abundant harvest for the glory of God and the service of our neighbour. Grandparents are such a vital part of the rearing of children. This has always been the case, but maybe it is the situation now more than ever when both parents have to work outside the home and need all the support and input they can get with their children. Grandparents are particularly important in helping the children to grow in faith in Christ and to be part of the life of the Church now and all through their lives. The parish community needs to be a place where Grandparents constantly receive encouragement and help to do what they are best at. For an appointment call . THE RICH SOIL In Ireland, many people have lost touch with the meaning of the Christian Story. This means that the Story (often) makes sense only as a thing to do, like a tradition or an occasional event. As a result, it is easy pickings for the ‘vultures’ of secularism, because the seed of faith does not find rich soil. Jesus tells us today that the seed of GOD’s Word needs this rich soil if it is to bear fruit. Here, in Clonmany, it means we need always to figure out how we can better prepare the soil of our parish life, so that it is seen as more attractive and relevant. A starting point is to stop doing the same unsuccessful things over and over again, and find a better way to tell our Story. It is to rediscover the frequency of the Gospel, and find new, creative, hope-filled and engaging ways to proclaim it. This is the rich soil: sharing the Good News with a joy and attraction that connects with people’s lives today. Thank You To everyone who ministers in our parish in any way. Each reading uses simple images from the world around us. Rain, seeds, soil, and harvest all show how God’s word brings life and hope. These readings remind us that God always works with purpose. In Isaiah, we hear how God’s word is like rain that makes the earth fruitful. Paul tells us in Romans that creation itself longs for freedom and shares in our hope. In the Gospel, Jesus uses the parable of the Sower to teach us that our hearts must be ready to receive God’s word. On the 15th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A, these passages come together to remind us that God’s plan is certain. His word nourishes us, even when life feels dry or hard. Fourth Sunday of Advent Sunday 21 December 2025 Christmas Message 2025 This week we will celebrate Christmas Day. The birth of Jesus Christ, over two thousand years ago, was a pivotal moment in the lives of many people at that time, and ever since. In a sense, we join the Angels, the Shepherds, and the Wise Men who rejoiced with Mary and Joseph at the birth of the long awaited Saviour of the world. We join the apostles and the disciples - men and women - who knew Jesus personally, who walked with Him and worked with Him in those early days of spreading the Good News of God's love for us in sending His Son among us. We join all those who, down the years and right up to our own time, have lived up to their baptismal promises to be God’s people, living and handing on the faith to the generations coming behind them. As we gather with family, friends, neighbours, and fellow parishioners for Christmas Mass and other celebrations, let us pledge ourselves to be a people of Faith, Hope, and Love in a world which needs the presence of Jesus Christ - through our care, our words, and our actions - now more than ever before. [illegible] Parishes of Glendermott & Strathfoyle Sunday 28th June 2026 Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “Welcoming the People of God” Throughout the Old Testament readings that we hear during the year, there are many instances of hospitality shown. In many ways this was seen as an essential part of the culture of the time. This is not just hospitality for immediate family and friends, but also in a more special way caring for the stranger. Without knowing who he was, we hear in this Sunday’s readings that the prophet Elisha was welcomed by the stranger as a Holy Man of God. Significantly, on the feast of Saints Peter and Paul which we celebrate this Monday (29 June), in this parish we mark forty years since the late Bishop Edward Daly rededicated St. Colum’s Church following its renovation in the previous years. It is worth reflecting on this, the Church as our spiritual family home. We think of the tears of the funerals and maybe also at a wedding! The joys of celebrating the sacraments of First Holy Communion, baptisms, marriages, confirmations and ordinations that many of us attended in the years before and since and for many years to come. But our parish churches, while a special and beautiful place of solitude, prayer, worship and many memories, are only the place where we receive our spiritual nourishment in Word and Sacrament of the Body of Christ. Yet the ‘Body of Christ’ is more than only receiving Holy Communion at Mass. By our baptism, we the people and those gone before us in faith of the Parish, the Diocese and the whole Church are the Body of Christ. We are sent out to live what we receive in our words and actions. In our time as we gather for Mass, as a parish community welcome all the people of God, familiar faces and the stranger alike who make up the Body of Christ around us. When we truly welcome any of the people of God, we trust that we welcome Christ and indeed we welcome the one who sent him.
