At first glance, Jesus ’ words about loving Him more than family can sound harsh. However, this is not an endorsement of neglecting family. Rather, it is a spiritual principle: when God is the ultimate priority, our love for others becomes purer and more selfless. Discipleship requires a willingness to carry one ’s cross—enduring hardship and prioritizing God ’s will above worldly comforts. You don't need to do something monumental to serve God. Jesus promises that even giving "a cup of cold water" a simple, small act of kindness done in His name —will be deeply noticed and rewarded by the Father Next bulletin will be on the weekend of 29/30 August. Please hand any anniversaries or notices into the sacristy before Mass. Summer Holidays and School is out! GRAVEYARD SUNDAYS 2026 Sunday 26 July at 3pm in St Mary’s, Cockhill Sunday 2 August at 3pm in Star of the Sea, Desertegney READINGS FOR 14TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Zec 9:9 -10. Zechariah addresses the Chosen People, shortly after the catastrophic destruc- tion of Jerusalem c. 586 BC, and their subsequent re- turn from Exile. He envisions the future time of the Messiah when the terror of war will have been replaced by the comfort of salvation. ‘All who are in anxiety, in sorrows, in sin ……. I will place you in all secu- rity.’(Homily of St John Chrysostom). Second Reading: Rm 8:9, 11 -13. ‘In St Paul, ‘to live un-spiritually’ means to confine oneself to human strength and values; this is a way to death. ‘To live spiritually’ is to rely on Christ and belong to him. God, who raised Jesus from the dead, will lead to eternal life folk who produce the fruits of the Spirit.’ (Glenstal Missal) Gospel: Mt 11:25 -30 ‘Yes, my yoke is easy and my burden light.’ Perhaps it has to be experienced to be believed, when - with the help of divine grace - the law of God becomes written in one’s heart, and the burden of keeping it becomes as light as breathing. While the learned and the powerful of the world have difficulty understanding it, ‘the humble welcome the light burden of the law of love.’ (Glenstal Missal). PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS That those who may be anxious or worried about feeling called to priesthood will trust the Lord and hear the One who is ". gentle and humble in heart." promising them rest and the peace that comes from knowing He is with them, carrying their burdens along- side them. GRAVEYARD SUNDAY 2026 There will be a brief meeting on Wednesday 8 July at 6:30pm in Cockhill Chapel for Eucharistic Ministers and those who help with the collection at the Annual Graveyard Mass in Cockhill taking place on Sunday 26 July at 3pm. The parish itself and everyone who contributed directly or indirectly to last weekend’s celebrations gave a great account of themselves. My family and all who travelled to be here have gone back with amazing memories of this great place and its people. To Bishop McKeown and all the priests who came, to our flower arrangers and teams outside and inside the chapel for all they did, and to our choirs and musicians for the wonderful music and song which will remain an abid- ing memory. To Father Walsh for his kind words. To everyone for their kind gifts and lovely messages, and to the Inishowen Gateway Hotel for their great hospital- ity. I assure you all of a continued remembrance in my prayers. Míle buíochas agus grá mór ó mó chroí. Christ the King, Strathroy: Saturday 6.15pm -6.45pm The Blessings of Hospitality The 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time Year A highlights the importance of welcoming others with kindness. The woman in the first reading recognizes Elisha as a man of God and offers him a place to stay. She does not ask for anything in return, but her generosity brings an unexpected blessing. Elisha promises that she will have a son, something she had not even dared to hope for. This story shows that acts of kindness often lead to blessings. The woman did not give to receive; she gave because she saw a need. In return, God granted her a gift beyond her expectations. This reminds us that when we open our hearts and homes to others, we allow God to work in unexpected ways. Hospitality is more than just sharing food or shelter. It is about welcoming others with love, respect, and an open heart. Jesus also speaks about this in the Gospel when He says that those who welcome His messengers welcome Him. Even small acts of kindness matter in God ’s eyes, encouraging us to think about how we treat others. Are we open to welcoming people into our lives? Do we recognize the presence of God in those we meet? When we show kindness without expecting anything in return, we reflect God ’s love in the world. St. Oliver Plunkett 1625 -1681 Feast Day - Wednesday 1 JulyTHIRTEENTH SUNDAY OF THE YEAR SUNDAY 28 JUNE 2026 In this weekend's gospel Jesus encourages the men He is calling to priesthood not to be afraid to ".take up their cross and follow [Him]." and promises them that they will find fulfilment and "life" in Him. At first glance, Jesus’ words about loving Him more than family can sound harsh. However, this is not an endorsement of neglecting family. Rather, it is a spiritual principle: when God is the ultimate priority, our love for others becomes purer and more selfless. Discipleship requires a willingness to carry one’s cross—enduring hardship and prioritizing God’s will above worldly comforts. You don't need to do something monumental to serve God. Jesus promises that even giving "a cup of cold water" a simple, small act of kindness done in His name—will be deeply noticed and rewarded by the Father. He is not asking us to love our families less, but to love Him first, so that every other relationship is transformed by His love. To “take up our cross ” is to surrender our fears, ambitions and desire for control, trusting that God ’s way leads to true life. The paradox of the Gospel remains: those who cling tightly to life lose it, while those who entrust their lives to Christ discover lasting joy and peace. Jesus also assures us that no act of love is too small. A simple cup of cold water offered in His name has eternal value. Every hidden act of kindness, every quiet sacrifice, and every faithful response to His call is seen, remembered and rewarded by God. We live this out when we choose patience instead of frustration with a family member, or when we take time to listen and help someone in need, even when it is inconvenient. May we have the courage to place Christ first, trusting that in losing ourselves for His sake we will discover the fullness of life He alone can give. SYMPATHY We offer our sympathy to the families of Patrick Weir, Marianus Park, Jackie Lynch, Sheelin Park Gerry Sharkey, Templegrove, who died during the week. May they rest in peace. This is more than hospitality. It means openness to the other and to the message. Each member of the Church has received a mission so we must respect each other in a spirit of faith and love. Those whom Christ sends in an apostolic or prophetic ministry are to be listened to, whatever our natural feelings about them may be. Monday 29th St Peter and St Paul. Martyred in Rome and venerated as the twin pillars of the Church, not only of Rome but worldwide: Peter who denied Christ but became the rock of stability, Paul who persecuted Christ in his followers but became his great preacher in the pagan world. Tuesday 30th The First Martyrs of the Church of Rome, who died in the persecution of Nero in 64. Wednesday 1st July St Oliver Plunkett , from Irish nobility, was ordained in Rome in 1654. He was appointed Archbishop of Armagh in 1669. He was forced to conduct a covert ministry during the suppression of priests. He was arrested and tried in Dundalk in 1679 for conspiring against the state. As he would not be convicted in Ireland he was moved to Newgate Prison in London and found guilty of high treason ‘for promoting the Catholic Faith’ and was condemned to death. He was martyred at Tyburn on 1 July 1681. Friday 3rd St Thomas, Apostle , is said to have preached the gospel in India where he was martyred. The faith that led him to know Christ in his wounds sent him to the farthest places to preach Christ. Saturday 4th St Elizabeth of Portugal (1271-1336) had an unhappy marriage with the King of Portugal. She persevered in prayer and good works and as a widow lived in poverty as a Franciscan tertiary. Local Safeguarding Representatives are Mary McGranaghan and Brídín Hannaway A short reflection on today’s Gospel Matthew 10: 37-42 ‘Anyone who finds his life will lose it; anyone who loses his life for my sake will find it’. These words spoken by Jesus in today’s Gospel, spoken with such force, can initially seem enigmatic, paradoxical, even. How can we find ourselves by losing oursel ves? And then it dawns on us. If the life we find ourselves living and cherishing is a life wedded exclusively to the material world, a life which embraces the power -hunger, greed and corrupt practices of that world, then that life, when it ends, is lost . But anyone who lives life with Jesus as its centre, a life which embraces Jesus fully – his teaching, his guidance, the cross he carried out of a love so profound it made the cold world reel in shocked incredulity, that person has found eternal life. To be a true and faithful disciple of Jesus is not easy, and Jesus knows this. He knows it is not easy for us to carry the cross of our suffering with the same courage, fortitude and humility with which he carried his own heavy cross to Calvary. He knows our predilection to attach ourselves to the wrong things, the wrong people, the shiny and superficial as opposed to the deep and worthwhile. He assures us over and over that he will never desert us: he will never abandon us to our fears. He assures us t hat true faith overcomes all fears: if we put his spirit before all else, our reward will be great indeed, in this life as well as in eternal life. We can experience in the here and now the peace and joy which is the reward of casting aside the ego -centre d life and embracing a life which is gloriously Jesus -centred. Jesus, may we never forget that faith can overcome all fear. Jesus, may we always remember to put you before all else if we are to gain a life of peace and joy for all eternity. That’ s an error . we know .Star of the Sea (Magilligan) https://staroftheseacatholic.com A cup of water Life is busy. Whether we are in school, college, working, or juggling family life with all sorts of other commitments, there is sometimes little time to pause and take stock of things. It can be hard to find time to reflect on how our faith is faring. When we do get a minute to assess things, do we find ourselves wanting? Many of us have the idea that we would like to live better lives, to be more caring, to help those in need. We would like to live up to what Jesus asks of us, if only we had time to do more. This desire to do better is an important element of our Christian journey. But often we imagine that this will require some sort of grand gesture or dramatic change of direction. If we are paralysed or overwhelmed by what we can ’t do, Jesus has some good news for us today. A cup of water isn ’t much, and offering hospitality to a stranger might not seem like a big deal, but that is where Jesus starts. Instructing his twelve disciples, he tells them that anyone who welcomes them or offers them a cup of cold water will be rewarded. What ’s more, he adds that anyone who welcomes them in fact welcomes Jesus, the one who sent them. Small acts of kindness and hospitality have significance beyond what we might expect. No matter how busy we are, there are opportunities every day to offer a cup of water here, or a helping hand there. All these small things play their part in building up God ’s kingdom. But the rewards promised by Jesus extendbeyondindividualalmsgivingtothosewhoworkforothersinathousand hidden ways, for instance maintaining a city water system, or caring for public hygiene, as civil servants, plumbers, engineers, scientists, streetcleaners or parents of families.
