Dolores’ untimely death, after a brief illness, generated a wave of sympathy for her devasted family. We offer our sincere sympathy to her beloved husband, Joe; her children Gary, Joanne, Donna & Séanan; their partners, Garry, Mark & Conor; her grandchildren, Clara, Cillian, Annalaina & Charlie; her sisters Marina & Bernie; and the wider family circle. Jesus is the icon of God the Father. He gives a face to the love and compassion of the Father. And Jesus calls us to offer service and the Good News to all without seeking a return for ourselves. It is our Christian life to be chosen just as the 12 were chosen, sent as they were sent. Somewhere in this world, there is someone for whom I am God’s gift of his presence, of his love, of his compassion. As St Teresa of Avila reminds us. Christ has no hands… He has only our hands to do His work today. Christ has no feet… He has only our feet to guide men along His path. Christ has no lips… He has only our lips to announce Him to the people of today. Christ has no means… He has only our help to lead people to Himself. We are the only Bible that people still read. The class was assigned to go out and smile at three people and document their reaction. The next day she and her family were in a McDonald ’s on a cold, clear morning. She writes, “We were standing in line, waiting to be served, when suddenly everyone around us began to back away, and then even my husband did. I did not move an inch. As I turned around, I smelled a horrible ‘dirty body ’ smell, and there standing behind me were two poor, homeless men. One of them smiled up at me, looking for acceptance. The second man fumbled with his hands, obviously mentally deficient and totally dependent on his friend. They had a handful of coins and bought only coffee because that was all they could afford. They had to buy something in order to sit down where it was warm. Acting on impulse, I bought two extra breakfasts and took them to the table where the men sat. I put the tray on the table and laid my hand on the blue -eyed gentleman ’s cold hand. He looked up at me with tears in his eyes and said, ‘Thank you. ’ I leaned over, began to pat his hand and said, ‘I did not do this for you; God is here working through me to give you hope. ’” Here is a Christian lady commissioned by Christ to reach out “the sheep without shepherds ” as Jesus sent his apostles to the shepherdless sheep with teaching and healing authority as described in today ’s Gospel. THE Granaghan Parish was greatly blessed by the presence of Sr Perpetua McNulty, Fr Paschal McDonnell and Geraldine Brolly, from /T_hornhill Ministries, who had been asked by the parish priest, Fr Charles Keaney, to lead a retreat from Sunday, February 24 until Wednesday, February 27. It was made clear from the start that this was to be a retreat not a Mission, in the old sense of the word, so parishioners were a bit unsure what to expect at the beginning. /T_he theme of the retreat was ‘/T_hreads of Healing and Hope’ and this was developed into threads of belonging, meaning, forgiveness and serenity. Morning Mass was followed by a short period of prayer and on the Tuesday there was the Morning Prayer of the Church, with participation from various parishioners. /T_here was also an opportunity one morning for the Sacrament of Reconciliation with Fr Paschal. On the /f_irst night, a centrepiece was created by parishioners using symbols representing some of the threads binding them together as a faith community and this remained in place throughout the retreat. Forgiveness and acceptance were the themes for the second night and on the Tuesday there was a special prayer vigil of healing. At the start of the retreat, parishioners were encouraged to write their mothers’ and fathers’ surnames on an altar cloth. During the liturgy of healing, these names were read out and then the cloth was carried to the front and used to dress the altar before Mass at 10 pm. It was a very beautiful and moving experience listening to the names of those who came before – the names were threads connecting parishioners to their community, their family members and members of Granaghan faith community through the ages. /T_he /f_inal session of the retreat was based around serenity and trust, and holding on to the threads which connect our parish to the Lord. /T_hroughout the retreat, there was a palpable sense of faith and holiness, and a willingness to participate, from the children in the school who were joined by Sr Perpetua and Geraldine to explore expressing their faith through music, stories and meditation, to the congregation in the church, and it was obvious that the Holy Spirit was at work. Heartfelt thanks were extended to the team from /T_hornhill Ministries for leading us in this very special time of prayer, and everyone got a chance to express their appreciation and chat about the experience over a cuppa in the local primary school at the close of the retreat.

Re-energised Fr Keaney re/f_lects on priesthood and importance of sabbatical DELIGHTED at the success of the /T_hornhill Ministries led retreat in Granaghan, parish priest, Fr Charlie Keaney described it as “a time of healing and nourishment” . Saying that there was time for Adoration, Anointing, Confession, and Contemplation, as well as the celebration of the Eucharist and Prayer of the Church at the start and end of each day, Fr Keaney added: “It truly was a gi/f_t of the spirit time and, hopefully, we all now have more vision of each other and will have more involvement in day- to-day parish life. W e have been restored!” Having taken a much-needed sabbatical in 2016, a/f_ter over 40 years in the priesthood – 13 of which were spent as parish priest of Dunboe, Macosquin and Aghadowey – Fr Keaney returned from that “restored” and able to bring a new energy to his role since as parish priest of Granaghan. Re/f_lecting on his path to the priesthood, the only child of the late Charles and Kathleen Keaney, Coleraine, recalled growing up in a home where faith and prayer were important. In addition, he was taught in St John’ s Primary School which was run by the Loreto nuns at the time, so faith was a big part of school life. “I was an altar server from the age of nine in my parish church, and I loved it, ” said Fr Keaney, who went on to attend St Columb’ s College in Derry as a boarder. “St Columb’ s, ” he pointed out, “was known then as the minor seminary and prayer was a big part of life there. W e had daily Mass and visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and night prayer. “So, I grew up surrounded by prayer. Religion was a very strong part of my life and when I was considering the priesthood, it occurred to me that perhaps I should be a missionary priest, but I was told that the Diocese needed priests. I wasn’t sure, however, I decided to give it a go and it worked out. ” Fr Keaney was ordained on June 1, 1975, in St John’ s Church, Coleraine, and went on to minister in: St Eugene’ s; Our Lady of Lourdes, Steelstown; Sacred Heart, Omagh; St Finlough’ s, Ballykelly; Buncrana; St John’ s, Coleraine; and now St John the Baptist, Granaghan (Swatragh). Commenting on his sabbatical in 2016, when he retired as parish priest of Coleraine, Fr Keaney said: “It wasn’t that I was living at some distance from my vocation, as I was busy, engaged and attentive, but somehow I was running on automatic; I was running on empty. “I was doing what St Charles Borromeo had warned his priests against – I was so involved in the needs of others that I was neglecting my own well-being, spiritually and otherwise. So, I knew I was long overdue a sabbatical. Diocesan priests are very bad at taking time out because of the nature of the ministry and the decreasing number of priests, but it actually improves their ministry by giving time to re/f_lect. ” Fr Keaney booked a sabbatical programme by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in San Antonio, T exas, that had been recommended to him and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of his life to date. Advertised as a programme for the seasoned pastor, Fr Keaney said that it focused on the four key aspects of the biblical Sabbath – ceasing, resting, embracing and feasting! “I knew the programme was going to be good, ” he recalled, “when I looked at the schedule and the lecturers, but it far exceeded my expectations. /T_here was a generosity of time and space to refocus, to achieve more balance and integration in life. “I returned from my sabbatical with a new attitude, strong trust, a gentle con/f_idence and a fresh approach. ” /T_he programme included an eight-day guided retreat, a day of recollection every few weeks, and a faith sharing group once a week. /T_hey celebrated Mass as a group three times a week and joined the rest of the community on the campus for the Eucharist at other times. “ At weekends, we went around the parishes to attend Mass, ” recalled Fr Keaney, “and with Mexican, African and American Masses amongst those to choose from, it was great to experience the various liturgies. ” Amongst the group of missionary and diocesan priests and religious on the programme with him were about /f_ive Irish people, including Fr Paddy O’Kane, PP Holy Family, Ballymagroarty, and others from Australia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Canada and America. /T_he classes covered such areas as theology, spirituality, the environment, health and well being, and scripture, and Fr Keaney was delighted that Fr Ron Rolheiser OMI, the president of the Oblate School of /T_heology there, was one of the lecturers on the programme. Highly recommending the very balanced programme and the taking of a sabbatical, the 69-year- old described his /f_ive months in T exas as one of the highlights of his life: “It is good to meet new people and discover new ideas, and become energised, renewed and refreshed. ” He remarked: “St Paul says always be happy in the Lord. W e are redeemed and we should look redeemed. ” Looking back on his priesthood, Fr Keaney said: “It has been challenging at times but it is worthwhile. I am glad that I made that decision all those years ago. I love the pastoral work, meeting people, visiting the sick, preaching and visiting the schools. THE BODY & BLOOD OF CHRIST SUNDAY 7 JUNE 2026 We pray for the men who will serve the Church as priests of our diocese, that their faith in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist will be strengthened as they share the Body and Blood of Christ with their brothers and sisters. Amen! Today we celebrate Corpus Christi - the Feast of the Body and Blood of Christ. We Catholics take Jesus at His word at the Last Supper when He took bread and wine and blessed them. Then, as He gave them to His disciples He said they were His Body and Blood. He didn't use the word "like."He didn't say they were symbols. He said, "This is My Body. This is My Blood." When we receive Holy Communion the priest or Eucharistic Minister holds the sacred host in front of us and says, (This is the) "Body of Christ." Our response is "Amen" which means "It is true." It's our way of expressing our belief in the Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. Sadly, many people say nothing at all or mutter their "Amen" . The same is sometimes true with the responses to the prayers of the Mass. Perhaps as we celebrate Corpus Christi this weekend we can pledge ourselves to being more fervent in expressing our Catholic faith. The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, which falls this year on Friday 12 June, is World Day of Prayer for Priests. ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN O RDINARY TIME The Harvest is Rich Matthew 9:36–10:8 As Jesus looked upon the crowds, He was moved with compassion, seeing people who were “harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. ” He then told His disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few, ” urging them to pray for workers to be sent into God's harvest. In a striking turn, those who prayed became the very labourers Jesus sent out. He gave them authority to proclaim the good news of God's kingdom and to minister to those in need, reminding them, “Freely you have received; freely give.” This Gospel challenges us to see others through the compassionate eyes of Christ, to pray for the growth of God's kingdom, and to be willing to serve when He calls. See you soon! #Papafrancesco #estateacasa #pope #p ope francis A short reflection on today’s Gospel Matthew 9:36-10:8 In today's Gospel, Jesus looks upon the crowds with compassion because they are " harassed and dejected , like sheep without a shepherd." He sees their struggles, fears, and needs, and His heart is moved with love for them. This image reminds us that God never looks upon us with indifference. He knows our burdens and continually reaches out to guide, strengthen, and care for us. Jesus first tells His disciples to pray for labourers for the harvest, teaching us that every vocation and every mission in the Church begins with prayer. We are invited to pray that more people will respond generously to God's call to serve Him in priesth ood, religious life, and lay ministry. Jesus then sends His disciples out to proclaim the Good News, heal the sick, and bring hope to those in need. Having received God's gifts, they are called to share them freely with others. The same mission belongs to us today. Through our kindness, encoura gement, generosity, and witness of faith, we can help bring Christ's presence into the lives of those around us. This Gospel invites us to see others with the compassionate eyes of Christ. In a world where many people experience loneliness, anxiety, or uncertainty, even a simple act of care can make a real difference. The Lord continues to call ordinary people to be His instruments of mercy, peace, and hope. May we respond generously to Christ's call, trusting in His guidance and grace. As we have freely received God's love, may we freely share it with all whom we meet. Prayer for Vocations to the Priesthood : In today's gospel Jesus encourages us to pray for vocations because there is a great need for workers in the abundant harvest of the Church and the world. We pray that those being called to do this work will respond generously. Here in the diocese of Derry we pray especially for Stephen Baxter who will be ordained as a priest for service in the diocese, in St Columb's Church, Waterside, at 3pm today, Sunday 14th June. LENT 2021: 40 DAYS TOGETHER WITH JESUS Lent is an opportunity to pray, fast and give as a Parish community with other Christians throughout the world. You are invited to join the Parish Lenten programme each day. It is an invitation to come together and closer to Jesus for these forty days.
