Day for life 2026 On this year’s Day for Life, Sunday 21st June, we reflect on the wonder of human life from the moment of conception. We remember how the LORD Jesus Christ Himself sanctified and experienced the beginning of life in the world as an unborn child, hidden in the womb of Mary. June – Month of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: Throughout the month of June, the Church honours the Sacred Heart of Jesus, a reminder of Christ’s great love for each one of us. Families are invited to pray often the simple aspiration, “Most Sacred Heart of Jesus I place all my trust in Thee ” during this month. In particular, parents are encouraged to pray this short prayer with their children – perhaps before leaving in the morning, in the car, at tea time or before going to bed. May devotion to the Sacred Heart draw the families of our parishes ever closer to the loving Heart of Jesus. Freedom to Live Fully, Until Death Comes: “Every human person possesses an infinite dignity, inalienably grounded in his or her very being, which prevails in and beyond every circumstance, state, or situation the person may ever encounter .” With that in mind, the Bishops of Ireland wish to invite people to consider once again some of the essential elements of the Church’s teaching on care at the end of life. Palliative and pastoral care focus on the needs of the whole person As pastors, we are well aware of the impact that critical or terminal illness has, not only on the person who is ill, but also on his or her family and friends. In his Letter to the Romans, Saint Paul writes: “ The life and death of each of us has its influence on others; if we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord, so that alive or dead we belong to the Lord” (Rom. 14:7 ). We believe that every person who is seriously ill, together with all those who are concerned with his or her care, however difficult the circumstances, is held in the unconditional love of God. “Despite our best efforts, it is hard to recognise the profound value of human life when we see it in its weakness and fragility. ”It is our experience however that, in the final weeks of terminal illness, many people can be helped to experience human and spiritual growth. Faced with the reality of their own mortality, they can and do come to understand themselves better, and to experience the love of family members and friends. This can be a time when old hurts are healed and people find inner peace. This process is supported through palliative and pastoral care, which places the focus on the needs of the whole person. “Assisted suicide” would undermine confidence of terminally ill It is argued by some that the provision of “assisted suicide” is simply about respecting the autonomy of the individual over his or her own life. Once life is taken away, however, autonomy is also taken away. The Church does not and never has insisted on the use of extraordinary means to prolong life. Nor is there any moral obligation on a sick person to accept treatment which they feel is unduly burdensome. A decision to end life prematurely, however, cuts off any prospect of growth or healing and represents a failure of hope. It is surely far better when a person’s freedom to live is affirmed and supported by a compassionate community of care. Even leaving aside the vision of faith, individual autonomy is not absolute, and consideration must be given to the impact of legislation on the common good, as well as on the individual. By legislating for assisted suicide or euthanasia, the State would contribute to undermining the confidence of people who are terminally ill, who want to be cared for and want to live life as fully as possible until death naturally comes. People who are dying are entitled to be accompanied in a holistic way. We believe that palliative care services need to be more widely available, in hospitals and hospices and in the community. Pope Francis says: “ We must accompany people towards death, but not provoke death or facilitate any form of suicide ”. “Care for life is therefore the first responsibility that guides the physician in the encounter with the sick ” and the duty of care applies “ not only when the restoration to health is a realistic outcome, but even when a cure is unlikely or impossible. ” It is often very difficult to accompany those who are suffering near the end of life. All the more reason, then, for Society to make sufficient resources available for the
integral care of the dying, so that no one is made to feel that either suffering, or caring, is unbearable. We reject legislation that would facilitate assisted suicide or euthanasia We have read the “ Final Report of the Joint Committee on Assisted Dying”. [6] The first recommendation of that report is “ that the government introduces legislation allowing for assisted dying, in certain restricted circumstances as set out in the recommendations of the report”. We totally reject that recommendation because, whatever the circumstances, the deliberate taking of human life, especially by those whose vocation is to care for it, undermines a fundamental principle of civilised society, namely that no person can lawfully take the life of another. People with intellectual disabilities would be particularly vulnerable We are aware, of course, that the “ Final Report ” proposes various “ restrictions ” regarding who might have access to assisted suicide and under what circumstances. We have little confidence that those proposed restrictions would offer any real protection. Taking into account what has happened in many other jurisdictions, and indeed, what is already happening in Ireland with regard to the law on abortion, we believe that it would be only a matter of time before proposals would be on the table again to extend the availability of assisted suicide to those in our society who are most vulnerable, including people with intellectual disabilites. Acting in Freedom and Truth Assisted suicide requires the active participation of healthcare professionals in taking the lives of the sick. We specifically reject the Recommendation in the Final Report which requires that, “ if assisted dying is legislated for, a doctor or nurse practitioner be present ” and “must account to the responsible authority .” Similarly, the Final Report proposes that, when a healthcare professional refuses to participate in ending the life of a patient, he or she would then be required to refer that same patient on to a “ participating healthcare professional ”. Requirements such as these would radically undermine the ethos of healthcare. Conscience is our “inner sanctuary” that sacred place where we come face to face with the truth and that includes the truth about the inherent dignity of the human person. Doctors and nurses are obliged, like everyone else, to seek the truth and to be faithful to it in the way they care for their patients. The Good Samaritan does not ‘pass by on the other side’ as if he didn’t see (Lk.10:31). Whenever we place healthcare professionals under pressure to participate, either directly or by referral, in an act that they themselves believe to be fundamentally immoral, we treat them as mindless functionaries. This does untold damage to the integrity of healthcare in Ireland and removes the human person as its primary focus. In our culture, we rightly hold doctors and nurses in high esteem because they are presumed always to be at the service of life, for as long as their patient lives. We call on Catholics to stand firmly in support of nurses and doctors who stand for life. One day it may be your life. THE Granaghan Parish was greatly blessed by the presence of Sr Perpetua McNulty, Fr Paschal McDonnell and Geraldine Brolly, from /T_hornhill Ministries, who had been asked by the parish priest, Fr Charles Keaney, to lead a retreat from Sunday, February 24 until Wednesday, February 27. It was made clear from the start that this was to be a retreat not a Mission, in the old sense of the word, so parishioners were a bit unsure what to expect at the beginning. /T_he theme of the retreat was ‘/T_hreads of Healing and Hope’ and this was developed into threads of belonging, meaning, forgiveness and serenity. Morning Mass was followed by a short period of prayer and on the Tuesday there was the Morning Prayer of the Church, with participation from various parishioners. /T_here was also an opportunity one morning for the Sacrament of Reconciliation with Fr Paschal. On the /f_irst night, a centrepiece was created by parishioners using symbols representing some of the threads binding them together as a faith community and this remained in place throughout the retreat. Forgiveness and acceptance were the themes for the second night and on the Tuesday there was a special prayer vigil of healing. At the start of the retreat, parishioners were encouraged to write their mothers’ and fathers’ surnames on an altar cloth. During the liturgy of healing, these names were read out and then the cloth was carried to the front and used to dress the altar before Mass at 10 pm. It was a very beautiful and moving experience listening to the names of those who came before – the names were threads connecting parishioners to their community, their family members and members of Granaghan faith community through the ages. /T_he /f_inal session of the retreat was based around serenity and trust, and holding on to the threads which connect our parish to the Lord. /T_hroughout the retreat, there was a palpable sense of faith and holiness, and a willingness to participate, from the children in the school who were joined by Sr Perpetua and Geraldine to explore expressing their faith through music, stories and meditation, to the congregation in the church, and it was obvious that the Holy Spirit was at work. Heartfelt thanks were extended to the team from /T_hornhill Ministries for leading us in this very special time of prayer, and everyone got a chance to express their appreciation and chat about the experience over a cuppa in the local primary school at the close of the retreat.

Re-energised Fr Keaney re/f_lects on priesthood and importance of sabbatical DELIGHTED at the success of the /T_hornhill Ministries led retreat in Granaghan, parish priest, Fr Charlie Keaney described it as “a time of healing and nourishment” . Saying that there was time for Adoration, Anointing, Confession, and Contemplation, as well as the celebration of the Eucharist and Prayer of the Church at the start and end of each day, Fr Keaney added: “It truly was a gi/f_t of the spirit time and, hopefully, we all now have more vision of each other and will have more involvement in day- to-day parish life. W e have been restored!” Having taken a much-needed sabbatical in 2016, a/f_ter over 40 years in the priesthood – 13 of which were spent as parish priest of Dunboe, Macosquin and Aghadowey – Fr Keaney returned from that “restored” and able to bring a new energy to his role since as parish priest of Granaghan. Re/f_lecting on his path to the priesthood, the only child of the late Charles and Kathleen Keaney, Coleraine, recalled growing up in a home where faith and prayer were important. In addition, he was taught in St John’ s Primary School which was run by the Loreto nuns at the time, so faith was a big part of school life. “I was an altar server from the age of nine in my parish church, and I loved it, ” said Fr Keaney, who went on to attend St Columb’ s College in Derry as a boarder. “St Columb’ s, ” he pointed out, “was known then as the minor seminary and prayer was a big part of life there. W e had daily Mass and visits to the Blessed Sacrament, and night prayer. “So, I grew up surrounded by prayer. Religion was a very strong part of my life and when I was considering the priesthood, it occurred to me that perhaps I should be a missionary priest, but I was told that the Diocese needed priests. I wasn’t sure, however, I decided to give it a go and it worked out. ” Fr Keaney was ordained on June 1, 1975, in St John’ s Church, Coleraine, and went on to minister in: St Eugene’ s; Our Lady of Lourdes, Steelstown; Sacred Heart, Omagh; St Finlough’ s, Ballykelly; Buncrana; St John’ s, Coleraine; and now St John the Baptist, Granaghan (Swatragh). Commenting on his sabbatical in 2016, when he retired as parish priest of Coleraine, Fr Keaney said: “It wasn’t that I was living at some distance from my vocation, as I was busy, engaged and attentive, but somehow I was running on automatic; I was running on empty. “I was doing what St Charles Borromeo had warned his priests against – I was so involved in the needs of others that I was neglecting my own well-being, spiritually and otherwise. So, I knew I was long overdue a sabbatical. Diocesan priests are very bad at taking time out because of the nature of the ministry and the decreasing number of priests, but it actually improves their ministry by giving time to re/f_lect. ” Fr Keaney booked a sabbatical programme by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in San Antonio, T exas, that had been recommended to him and it turned out to be one of the best experiences of his life to date. Advertised as a programme for the seasoned pastor, Fr Keaney said that it focused on the four key aspects of the biblical Sabbath – ceasing, resting, embracing and feasting! “I knew the programme was going to be good, ” he recalled, “when I looked at the schedule and the lecturers, but it far exceeded my expectations. /T_here was a generosity of time and space to refocus, to achieve more balance and integration in life. “I returned from my sabbatical with a new attitude, strong trust, a gentle con/f_idence and a fresh approach. ” /T_he programme included an eight-day guided retreat, a day of recollection every few weeks, and a faith sharing group once a week. /T_hey celebrated Mass as a group three times a week and joined the rest of the community on the campus for the Eucharist at other times. “ At weekends, we went around the parishes to attend Mass, ” recalled Fr Keaney, “and with Mexican, African and American Masses amongst those to choose from, it was great to experience the various liturgies. ” Amongst the group of missionary and diocesan priests and religious on the programme with him were about /f_ive Irish people, including Fr Paddy O’Kane, PP Holy Family, Ballymagroarty, and others from Australia, Vietnam, Sri Lanka, South Africa, Canada and America. /T_he classes covered such areas as theology, spirituality, the environment, health and well being, and scripture, and Fr Keaney was delighted that Fr Ron Rolheiser OMI, the president of the Oblate School of /T_heology there, was one of the lecturers on the programme. At the hea rt of Our Catholic Faith is tis the belief in the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist. During the Mass, through the consecration of the bread and wine, they become the Body and Blood of Christ. This transformation, known as transubstantiation, is a mystery of faith that calls us to a deeper relationship with Jesus. This is what is at the heart of the Feast of Corpus Christi,. In John 6:51, Jesus declares, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven. Whoever eats this bread will live forever. His words challenge His listeners because He speaks not symbolically, but of a real communion with Him through His Body and Blood. Jesus teaches that the Eucharist is the source of eternal life, nourishing us not only spiritually but drawing us into a deeper union with Him. The people listening to Jesus struggle to understand His words. Yet Jesus does not soften His teaching. Instead, He emphasi ses that His flesh is true food and His blood is true drink. In these words, the Church recogni ses the foundation of the Eucharist, where Christ becomes truly present and gives Himself completely for the salvation of the world. LENT 2021: 40 DAYS TOGETHER WITH JESUS Lent is an opportunity to pray, fast and give as a Parish community with other Christians throughout the world. You are invited to join the Parish Lenten programme each day. It is an invitation to come together and closer to Jesus for these forty days.
